
Mary Alice Haddad is the John E. Andrus Professor of Government, Chair of the Government Department, and Professor of East Asian and Environmental Studies at Wesleyan University. She studies civil society, environmental politics, and urban policy with a focus on East Asia. She is the author of Environmental Politics in East Asia (Cambridge, 2023), Effective Advocacy: Lessons from East Asia’s Environmentalists (MIT, 2021), Building Democracy in Japan (Cambridge, 2012), Politics and Volunteering in Japan: A Global Perspective (Cambridge, 2007), and co-editor of Greening East Asia (University of Washington, 2020), and NIMBY is Beautiful (Berghahn Books, 2015). Her current research explores the role and impact of city diplomacy, the ways that cities are working with each other across national boundaries to solve common problems.
