International Symposium
“Future of U.S.-Japan Relations in the Age of Division”
President, Japan Forum on International Relations
WATANBE Mayu
We are pleased to announce that the Japan Forum on International Relations will hold an international symposium titled “Future of U.S.-Japan Relations in the Age of Division” on Monday, November 18, as detailed below.
It is no exaggeration to say that the world is now entering an "age of division." The ongoing wars in Russia and Ukraine, along with the conflict between Israel and Hamas, have deepened global divisions. The intensifying U.S.-China rivalry is leading to economic decoupling, while the escalating climate crisis has exacerbated tensions between major powers and between developed and developing nations. Additionally, social and political divisions are deepening within both the U.S. and Japan.
In the United States, a new administration is poised to emerge following the presidential election, while Japan is preparing for a new government after the dissolution of the House of Representatives and the upcoming general election. How will the new administrations in both countries cooperate to confront the challenges of this divisive era?
The newly launched U.S.-Japan joint research project for 2024, titled “Deepening of U.S.-Japan Cooperation on ‘Non-Military’ Aspects” (research duration: two years), aims to unravel the patterns of division within U.S. and Japanese societies and clarify shared issues. The project will focus on deepening cooperation in non-military fields, which have increasingly become significant, and explore concrete methods and frameworks that both countries can address together.
In this first year of the project, the symposium will gather U.S. and Japanese members to highlight the challenges faced in non-military areas such as the economy, trade, mobility of people, and social division, while seeking hints for collaboration.
