The 44th Meeting of "Diplomatic Roundtable"
on "The Recent Situation in War on Terror in Afghanistan" Held

JFIR and its two sister organizations, the Global Forum of Japan and the Council on East Asian Community, taking advantage of an occasion of a visit to Japan of a prominent person on international and other affairs, regularly organize a "Diplomatic Roundtable" meeting, which is an informal gathering of members of JFIR and its two sister organizations for a frank exchange of views and opinions with the visiting guest. The 44th "Diplomatic Roundtable" meeting on the topic of "The Recent Situation in War on Terror in Afghanistan" was held on 28 January 2009. An introductory presentation by  H.E. Mr. Haron AMIN, Ambassador of Afghanistan to Japan, was as follows.

It has been eight years since the 9.11 attack took place in 2001, but the situation in Afghanistan has rather deteriorated as evidenced by the increase of armed insurgencies by more than 30% compared with the last year's figure, and over 8,000 lives have been lost in the region last year. In the beginning of this year, the suicide bombing terrorism happened near the German Embassy in Kabul. So, I'm afraid that the year 2009 will be worse than the last year. The Obama administration has decided that the United States will shift its focus of "War on Terror" from Iraq to Afghanistan. Afghanistan is becoming the decisive battle ground of "War on Terror". If we should be defeated here, the terrorism will be more active and its affected areas will be scattered around all over the world.
